MORTE DI UN PROGETTO EDITORIALE? (Bansheeiana)

MORTE DI UN PROGETTO EDITORIALE?

(Bansheeiana)

BANSHEES FLASHES

For my second entry in the book I opted for small souvenir sketches: they are easy to write and read.

They all, somehow, as for John McGeoch entry, relate to the band as a kind of “second, very loose, family” (sounds like “The Addams Family”? Well, they stand ex aequo as my families of choice).

Please, rest assured: I am not claiming to be better than any other long-time follower of the band, just that somehow, I obtained the confidence of the Banshees.

With a big thank you to the band, Billy Houlston, Tony Selinger (and many more).

1983, autumn: Tony Selinger gifts me with an AAA pass (his?) for the two RAH gigs.

1983, end of the year: I receive a postcard from Siouxsie: it is from Israel, but the stamps are from England: it works as a Christmas card.

1984, March 29th, Milano: Tony gives me an MC7 with a mix of Hyæna.

1984, summer, Steve Severin:

-          June: Steve quotes in an interview for Sounds the cassette tape I sent him months before.

-          July: Steve sends me a very nice postcard from Canada.

1984, June 25th: end of the British tour party held, very late at night, at Elysee Greek Restaurant, off Tottenham Court Road (London): Siouxsie smashes loads of plates (as in tradition).

Minor note: AAA passes got downgraded days before after some idiot tried something backstage.

1985, July 12th, Torino after gig: I am “appointed” new tour manager for a couple of days.

1985, July 15th, Correggio after gig (the day before): Siouxsie “feeds me” with some of her tortellini, sharing her fork with me.

1986, July 19th, Clevedon (WOMAD):

-          Whole afternoon spent backstage with, among others, Steve’s girlfriend Cricket who sports an Edie Sedgwick painted on the back of her jacket, Billie McKenzie, Adele a girl roadie dressed like Jos (for those who know him).

-          After gig at the band’s hotel watching the boxing match between Frank Bruno and Tim Witherspoon.

1987, July 25th, London: I spend most of the afternoon talking with Siouxsie’s sister Annabelle (who I probably met in 1984).

Zero recollections about what we spoke about, other than PETA.

1988, September 29th, Munchen: I am the only person on the guest list of the gig and I “end” at the band hotel with a long post gig with Siouxsie, Steve and Budgie.

1990, September 7th, Padova: the gig is cancelled because of a rain storm:

-          We spend the entire night in the hotel hall, me and my friend Lucia, talking about everything and anything with the Banshees and some of the crew.

-          In the morning, we leave the hotel with bills unpaid: as those in care with that obligation simply were not there.

1991, October 10th, Milano: during the gig, I have the honour to have “Painted Bird” dedicated to me.

1999, September 30th, Milano: Siouxsie (with Budgie) is the guest of a fashion show by Alessandro De Benedetti at the club Plastic. Follows a late and noisy dinner with some happy few (thank you Alessandro).

(Facebook Down Series - 207)

Richard Jobson.

SUEDE: ASSOCIAZIONE DI PENSIERI (Steg about Steg Series – 9)

SUEDE: ASSOCIAZIONE DI PENSIERI

(Steg about Steg Series – 9)

Dove sei, oggi?

L’amico è Billy Houlston, noto come “Chainsaw”.
Su internet dovreste trovare riferimenti biografici: servono?

Billy, un giorno, decide di svoltare e ... Diventa l’anima mediatica di Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Ma occorre arrivare all’anno 1982: “You must be Steffàno xxxx” mi apostrofa con voce nasale Billy, capelli quasi a spazzola (credetemi) backstage pomeridiano allo Hammersmith Palais.

Fast forward.
Io e Exxxa siamo a Londra ...

THE ALTERNATE MCGEOCH (Bansheeiana)

THE ALTERNATE MCGEOCH

(Bansheeiana)

While browsing through my files I found a long writing of mine addressed to a soulmate of mine.

Being more accurate than what I wrote years after for the blog, here it is.

No corrections, no “ps, just as it was.

QUOTE

                                                                       15th of March 2004

A propos de John McGeoch.

I met him after the concert in Torino, 26 of June 1981.

In the afternoon I already talked with Budgie and with Tony Selinger (then the sound engineer for the band and a sort of my “big brother” when I attended S&TB concerts for some time).

Ended the concert, Siouxsie was ill for food poisoning and we waited for the band to come out of the theatre, while she was treated at the hospital emergency.

When John came out I tried to talk with him and, straight, let him know that I was not going to discuss guitar strings or Di Marzio pick ups: not a musician myself I was more interested in knowing who was going to bring dirty clothes to the laundry. He was somehow surprised and, laundry apart, he told me he had chickens in the backyard at home.

I told him I was going to be in London in the summer and he told me to try to get in touch with him outside the venue.

I don’t remember exactly (probably some memories are written in my diary, at home), but first I managed to get myself recognised the first day (indeed I waited some five hours outside the Hammersmith Palais). For sure the second night I obtained the unobtainable and had been ushered backstage by one of the security big guys: Pat (kind of walking mountain in size).

Inside the dressing rooms it was a sort of dream come true and in the end John invited me at their hotel for an end of the tour party: I was sitting next to him in the van and when some fans asked for autographs he told me to take away my pen: “them were them, and I was I” (a lesson learned).

We met again in Milano, 19 July 1982 and some shit hit the trees (it was an open air festival) when almost a scuffle followed because the Italian promoter tried to throw out a friend of mine (who should kiss my ass: he got the backstage and the band just like me, with no sweat!) during the afternoon. Both John and the band manager ensured that things should calm down.

Last time we met was a few months after: I was in London and by chance Tony told me the band was recording, and the place was also close to my hotel.

I waited some two hours in the reception: in the end John came out with a pint of red wine. I spent some six hours in the studio and witnessed the birth of a recording (and much more).

That was me and John; always missed since November 1982, when because of some nervous problems he quit the band before the English tour.

Tony got me the tickets for the two London dates, I sneaked inside in the afternoon and I was playing pinball. A voice from behind says: “You must be Steffàno”. That was Billy Houlston (You know him), and this is another story.

I saw John onstage with Public Image Limited, at a concert I attended with Billy some years after. No way to meet him afterward.

E PENSARE CHE “NON VOLEVAMO ALCUNCHÉ”
(riflessioni su Siouxsie and the Banshees e Bauhaus,
con degli anniversari in mezzo)

La parte virgolettata del titolo di questo post trae origine sia da quello di una canzone dei Bauhaus virato a contrario: “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” ([1]), sia ancor più a contrario rispetto a “Don’t know what I want/But I know how to get it” ([2]), e volendo penso anche a “No sé que quiero/Pero sé lo que no quiero” ([3]).

Tutto ciò accadeva prima, durante e dopo i Joy Division.

BANSHEEIANA - 2

NICO (or how fans are – mostly – still the same as thirty years ago and worth very little)

NICO
(or how fans are – mostly – still the same as thirty years ago
and worth very little)

Today, it’s 2012 not 1967, I’ve been hit by another sad truth: fans are still just fans, most of them are worth very little.
This is not something new, to be honest, but I thought times changed (for better). The late John McGeoch told me not to bother about Siouxsie and the Banshees average fans, while we were leaving on a van the London Hammersmith Odeon: it was the summer of 1981, we were heading for the Cunard Hotel where it would’ve been held the “End of the Ju-ju Tour party”.

So they are releasing a 6 discs “super deluxe edition” of The Velvet Underground & Nico album in two months time.
You check the web for reviews and further information about this boxed set (you know I am not very happy about this never ending deluge of expensive editions of records we already own sometimes in multiple copies and formats) and you find almost insulting words for Nico. Sad and stupid opinions.

Nico opened for Siouxsie and the Banshees during the autumn tour of 1978. She opened for Bauhaus too, in October 1981.
Nico acted in La dolce vita: you fans like “blindly” Federico Fellini (I don’t).
Nico had the guts to have relationships, inter alia, with Iggy Pop (you fans may not like him) and with Jim Morrison (you fans probably liked him).

You average fans of Velvet Underground are just fans.
You fans maybe do not even know what were Nico’s relationships with “saint” Lou Reed and “I do not like him but have to kneel before him” John Cale.

You fans behave just like Alain Delon, who had a son with Nico but not the guts to legally acknowledge him – Ari – his son.

You fans, little janitors of pretentiousness.

I do not believe that such little and selfish people will get better.
So they can just stay within their little world, in which Velvet Underground were a boy band (Moe Tucker notwithstanding).
