"Champagne for my real friends. Real pain for my sham friends" (used as early as 1860 in the book The Perfect Gentleman. Famously used by painter Francis Bacon)

NICO (or how fans are – mostly – still the same as thirty years ago and worth very little)

NICO
(or how fans are – mostly – still the same as thirty years ago
and worth very little)

Today, it’s 2012 not 1967, I’ve been hit by another sad truth: fans are still just fans, most of them are worth very little.
This is not something new, to be honest, but I thought times changed (for better). The late John McGeoch told me not to bother about Siouxsie and the Banshees average fans, while we were leaving on a van the London Hammersmith Odeon: it was the summer of 1981, we were heading for the Cunard Hotel where it would’ve been held the “End of the Ju-ju Tour party”.

So they are releasing a 6 discs “super deluxe edition” of The Velvet Underground & Nico album in two months time.
You check the web for reviews and further information about this boxed set (you know I am not very happy about this never ending deluge of expensive editions of records we already own sometimes in multiple copies and formats) and you find almost insulting words for Nico. Sad and stupid opinions.

Nico opened for Siouxsie and the Banshees during the autumn tour of 1978. She opened for Bauhaus too, in October 1981.
Nico acted in La dolce vita: you fans like “blindly” Federico Fellini (I don’t).
Nico had the guts to have relationships, inter alia, with Iggy Pop (you fans may not like him) and with Jim Morrison (you fans probably liked him).

You average fans of Velvet Underground are just fans.
You fans maybe do not even know what were Nico’s relationships with “saint” Lou Reed and “I do not like him but have to kneel before him” John Cale.

You fans behave just like Alain Delon, who had a son with Nico but not the guts to legally acknowledge him – Ari – his son.

You fans, little janitors of pretentiousness.

I do not believe that such little and selfish people will get better.
So they can just stay within their little world, in which Velvet Underground were a boy band (Moe Tucker notwithstanding).
